What is a Monstera Plant?

Monstera Plant or known as the Swiss Cheese plant originated from southern Mexico to southern Panama. Monstera is thought to be derived from the Latin monstrum, which means monster, in referring to the foliage, however this is debatable. This plant belongs to the “Araceae” family, leaf-holes are called fenestrations and are theorized to maximize sun fleck capture on the forest floor by increasing the spread of the leaf while decreasing the mass of leaf cells to support.

There are two different species of Monstera as houseplants – Monstera deliciosa and Monstera adansonii.

Monstera Deliciosa – have longer leaves and are called “deliciosa” because they rarely produce flowers or edible fruit.

Monstera Adansonii – is the cheesiest of all monsteras. The leaves are thinner compared to the deliciosa.

  • Soil
  • Temperature
  • Sunlight
  • Humidity
  • Water

Pick the right soil for the plant and place it at a temperature that is not too hot and not cold. It should be water every 1 to 2 weeks depending on the soil if it dries early.

Monstera plants should receive bright to medium indirect sunlight, not too much so that the leaves will not burn and turn brown.
